Name:The Ember
The Ember is a myth, a child of the ancient gods said to be fire given flesh. As the lore goes, he was favored by his mother, the Sun Goddess, and rarely left her side. One day, as she walked the world to give all living things her light, mother and son happened upon a dragon and his prey that lay dying in their path. Moved to render aid, the Ember breathed life into the nostrils of the dragon, and from his lips, the breath of fire passed into the dragon's lungs. To save the man, the Sun Goddess placed the dragon within his flesh, creating the first of the dragon shifters.

While the myth is well known to all dragons, the face most recently associated with the title is not that of a demigod, but the masked visage of Killian Dunn of the Midnight Blood.

Descended from among the first of the dragon shifters of Nocturne, those who sacrificed the light for power, Killian was born with an elder twin brother, putting his mother through three days of agony before he slipped from the womb after his elder sibling. Unlike the dark and silent newborn Corvis, Killian drew his first breath with a furious howl of indignation that first attested to the passion that would live in him for all his days.

Growing up side by side, Corvis and Killian were close as many twins are: they shared everything, with the younger Killian living in worship of his older brother. Each inherited the magic of their bloodline at opposing sides: Corvis a shadow mage, Killian a fire mage, darkness and light. For centuries, their parents ruled as chieftans of their clan until a tragedy all but wiped out the Midnight Blood.

That tragedy was an inferno, one that started in the Dunn home and spread through the village, slaughtering all life in its wake. Escaping from his home, Killian crawled away from the devastation and nursed his injuries alone, believing himself to be the only survivor of the tragedy...and, quite possibly, its creator as a young mage still learning the finer points of control over his enormous power.

For many centuries, Killian lived as a hermit, hiding his burn scarred face behind a mask that bore the red and black sigil of the Ember, the god to whom Killian prayed for salvation. In time, Killian came to master his gifts, learning not only how to walk through fire without burning, but how to heal his own scars created by fire.

The mask, however, remained to hide his identity. For as Killian grew in power, wisdom, and strength, so grew the power of his brother as he became chieftan of the conquered tribes of Nocturne, and eventually king of the realm. Living apart from the outside world, he allowed the sightings of the Ember to be just that while he observed as the Night Dragon's legend grew...and he waited.

For as Killian's power and knowledge grew, he came to realize that he was not responsible for the slaughter of his people. He came to realize that a black enchantment started the blaze, and kept fast asleep the whole of his tribe while they burned to death in their beds...helpless under the kind of enchantment only a shadow mage could have cast.

Killian remains content to live in darkness, to let the world believe he is a secluded godling...and wait for the day that he can confront his twin with the crimes he believe Corvis Dunn has committed.
